The first Saturday of the month means Granada Boulevard turns into one long open-air gallery, the Tortugas are home for two games at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, the eyes of the racing world are on Churchill Downs for Derby Day, the curtain rises on a Broadway revue in Ormond Beach, and DeLand Artisan Alley is letting the public peek inside its metal studio.

Admission is free, a complimentary shuttle loops the corridor, and at the Ormond Memorial Art Museum the May feature is regional artist Renee Palermo — with a free gallery talk at 5:00 PM in the reception gallery.

The Tortugas — the High-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds — are in the middle of a 12-game homestand and host the Clearwater Threshers (Phillies affiliate) Saturday night at historic Jackie Robinson Ballpark. The Jack is the same field where Jackie Robinson broke baseball’s color line in spring training back in 1946, and on a soft May evening on the river it’s still one of the best $12 nights out in the state.
Saturday games typically end with a postgame fireworks show. Gates open about 90 minutes before first pitch.

Pro tip: post time is late afternoon, so you can catch the Art Walk at 3 PM, drift over for the call of the race around 7 PM, then walk to the Tortugas game — or vice versa.

Pair with a stroll through the Stetson University campus and lunch on Woodland Boulevard for a full DeLand day.
